Growing up in Namibia, life was difficult for Vicky. As a lesbian, Vicky knew she had to hide her identity and hide who she truly is:

“It is not easy at all. There is a lot of discrimination, a lot of discriminating against you. It is not culturally acceptable to be a lesbian. You are seen as bringing shame to your family. You are treated differently, you are treated like you are nobody.”

When Vicky’s family found out about her sexuality, they weren’t accepting. Instead, they forced her to get married to a man much older than her, to avoid bringing shame onto her family.

“I was so unhappy. I didn’t want to. But my life was at risk if I disobeyed. I didn’t know what to do.”

Vicky knew she couldn’t live like this. She came to the UK to seek safety.

“I knew that the UK respects human rights, women’s rights, LGBTQ+ rights. I thought I could be safe and free here.”

Whilst she waits for her refugee status, Vicky is finding community, hope and happiness in Rainbow Sisters – Women for Refugee Women’s solidarity group for LGBTQ+ women:

“Rainbow Sisters means a lot to me. It has changed me. I see myself, I believe in myself, I can be myself no matter what. I have made so many friends at Rainbow Sisters. I know that I can live my life and I can be happy.”

This year will be the first time Vicky is attending a Pride celebration, along with many of her friends from Rainbow Sisters.

“It is so exciting to even think about. To meet with so many other people who are LGBTQ+, to celebrate together… it will be amazing.”

Looking to the future, Vicky has one dream:

“To live my life happily, with my partner, to walk around freely and without fear. To live happily and freely as the lesbian woman I am.”

The UK asylum system causes huge harm to LGBTQ+ women like Vicky. In Rainbow Sisters, women can connect, find community, and support each other through the gruelling process. And you can make a difference too!
