We’re proud to have co-produced a trauma-informed guide with Trauma Treatment International, Care4Calais, and Refugee Legal Support on supporting survivors of torture.
The guide shares vital learnings from survivors of torture, and professionals, working with them, on what can help overcome barriers and create a trauma-informed approach.
Reflections from survivors of torture include:
Safety: “Take your time to really introduce yourself. Check if I’m comfortable and in a good place.”
Predictability: “Give space and time. Don’t rush people; trying to get an understanding of processes can take time.”
Trust and connection: “Relationship and trust is key.”
Choice and voice: “Listen and try to connect with my whole experience.”
Cultural awareness: “Be curious and get out of your comfort zone to learn.”
Our deep thanks and respect goes to the individuals who shared their experiences and reflections with such openness and courage, and to the frontline workers who shared their learnings and experience. Your time and commitment made this guide so valuable.
We hope you find the guide useful. Please share with your networks!
Our Co-Director, Isabel Young, says:
“We are proud to have contributed to this important resource alongside our respected sector partners. Supporting people who have survived torture requires deep trust, commitment, compassion and active listening. Working on this guide reinforces what we see every day: when women are listened to, believed, and supported with compassion, they can begin to rebuild their lives, on their own terms. We hope this guide acts as a helpful tool for many professionals to shape trauma-informed approaches.”
