Refugee Week 2025: Community as a Superpower

It’s Refugee Week 2025 and this year, the theme is ‘Community as a Superpower’ and we couldn’t agree more.

At Women for Refugee Women, community isn’t just about belonging; it’s about healing, growth, and a chance for refugee women to rebuild their lives on their own terms.

To mark the week, four members of our network shared what community means to them:

Joy

“Life wasn’t easy for me before I joined WRW. I didn’t have any friends to talk to or anywhere to go. But when I joined, all my anxieties, worries and loneliness disappeared.

My favourite activities are English class on a Monday and Digital Skills on a Wednesday. The community at WRW is united and supportive, all the women are amazing.

Community is understanding each other, loving each other, and helping each other. I love my community at WRW so much.”

Rebecca

“Becoming part of Women for Refugee Women has been transformational for me.

The activities, the support, the community… it has made me who I am today.

I didn’t know what to expect before coming here. I found a safe, welcoming and supportive space. I found people who value me, believe in me and encourage me. I found like-minded people, friends, family, sisters.

There’s so much I have been through, but being around people who support me allows me to think more positively. My mental and physical wellbeing has improved so much.

My potential has been unlocked. I have a voice, and I am using it for social change! I know that I have purpose, and I have hope.

Being part of this community has changed everything. I feel motivated to rebuild my life. I belong. My sisters belong. We belong here.”

Jane

“Life was so hard for me. I had no confidence and didn’t know where to start, who to talk to, where to go…  Then, a friend introduced me to WRW.

I had lost trust and confidence in people and my mental health had been impacted so negatively. But here I built my confidence through the activities, I speak out for change, I do the things I like to do such as campaigning.

The community is a welcoming environment where women feel comfortable, share their stories, connect, stand in resistance, support each other, and make change together!

One thing that is very special at WRW is the level of care they give to you. The hospitality, the love. This is what makes WRW so special to me.”

Mercy

The community brings us together; we care and love one another. WRW is small but mighty!

Each week, hundreds of women come through the doors at our warm and welcoming community space.

Whether it’s to receive legal advice, practice English or to connect with friends, our work is only possible because of our compassionate and generous supporters.

Support our work this Refugee Week and make a real difference to refugee women like Joy, Rebecca, Jane and Mercy.
