Relationships, by Jannat

I want to discuss my relationship with my newfound parents.

I was searching for a country where I could find acceptance. Fortunately, I received an opportunity for a work visa but upon arriving in the UK, my real struggle began. I didn’t know anyone and was unsure of where to go or where to stay. Eventually, I sought assistance from a charity due to my homelessness.

The charity helped me find a new home, and I moved in with my host family. This is where I truly found my new parents. They supported me emotionally, just like birth parents would. They reassured me that, regardless of my asylum status, they would always be there for me. Their kindness touched me deeply, especially since my biological parents never understood my feelings. I shared my struggles with my host family, and they accepted me without judgment, offering support for anything I needed. They treat me the same as their own children.

This relationship has been transformative. I never anticipated such positive changes in my life. My birth parents failed to comprehend my emotions and were more concerned about societal expectations. In contrast, my host family genuinely understands me. They don’t impose pressure; if I express a desire to go out, they provide me with money, although I often tell them I don’t need it. They encourage me to spend time with friends to help clear my mind, as I occasionally struggle with self-harm when alone. If I don’t see them for a couple of hours, I start to miss them and reach out to check where they are.

There is so much more that I want to share, but it would be never-ending.

Now I realise that without them, I would feel lost. This is the relationship I want to highlight—one of understanding, support, and unconditional love.

suddenly, to be located and held in the lap
