My reflections

After almost four years as the Director of Women for Refugee Women, I have decided that it is time to move on. I want to take a moment to express my deepest gratitude for the incredible journey we’ve shared. It has been an honour and privilege to lead an organisation that supports and advocates for women seeking asylum in the UK – a cause very close to my heart. As a refugee myself – I fled the Rwandan genocide against the Tutsi 30 years ago and sought asylum in Belgium – this work has always been deeply personal to me.

It has been a privilege to take on the leadership from Natasha Walter, the founder of the organisation, and to continue her amazing work. I am immensely grateful to have had the opportunity to work alongside such committed colleagues, trustees, and volunteers. Together, we have achieved remarkable milestones.

When I joined the organisation in January 2021, we were in the midst of the COVID-19 pandemic. We worked tirelessly to safely bring back in-person activities for the women we support. I also led the development of the strategic plan for 2022-2025, including the creation of a new staff structure. Our campaigning efforts against inhumane Government policies—such as the Nationality and Borders Act, the Illegal Immigration Act, and the threat of deportations to Rwanda—have been central to our mission.

I am particularly proud that we were able to strengthen our relationships with supporters and funders, securing significant resources to continue delivering vital support for women. None of this would have been possible without your unwavering support, collaboration, and trust.

Above all, my greatest source of pride is working closely with my colleagues to ensure that the women we support are at the centre of everything we do. From leading our campaigns to engaging with our volunteer groups and steering committees, their voices and needs have always guided our work.

Leadership transitions always bring change, but I am confident that the foundation we’ve built together will continue to support the organisation’s growth and success. I’m thrilled to pass the baton to two of my colleagues, Andrea Vukovic, our Deputy Director, and Isabel Young, our Head of Grassroots Programmes, who will step in as interim Co-Directors in January 2025. Together, they bring a wealth of experience and expertise that will enable Women for Refugee Women to continue thriving.

I will remain in my role until the end of March 2025 to facilitate a smooth handover and finalise the implementation of our strategy for 2022-2025.

I look forward to supporting the organisation’s continued success in new ways and witnessing the amazing things yet to come. Thank you for your partnership, your faith in our mission, and your dedication to creating a brighter future for women seeking asylum in the UK. I hope to stay connected and look forward to seeing the next phase of our shared journey.

After a short break, I plan to explore opportunities to work with grassroots organisations supporting women and young people to reach their full potential.

With gratitude and warmest regards,

Alphonsine
