We're looking for volunteers to support our activities for refugee women
Drama Volunteers
We’re looking for Drama volunteers who are available from mid-September to mid-July 2027, to support refugee and asylum-seeking women to practice drama in a warm, welcoming, and fun environment.
About the role
Do you have a background in drama and performance and/or Creative ESOL? We are excited that our drama classes for asylum seeking and refugee women on Mondays are expanding, and we have spaces for more session volunteers:
- Session 1: Drama For Life: focussing on English language learning, making friends, and wellbeing, 10:00am – 12:00pm on Mondays
- Session 2: Drama For Performance: Confidence to speak in public, devising our own shows, and building creative facilitation skills. 12.30pm – 2pm Mondays
Time commitment
- Two hours per week, during term times
- In-person delivery at our activities space near Old Street, London
Our will volunteer will:
- Have strong written communication skills
- Be confident leading group learning activities
- Be patient, empathetic and supportive
- Be London-based and able to attend sessions in person
You may also have:
- Experience teaching Drama
- Experience working with refugee communities or vulnerable groups
- Knowledge of ESOL and literacy development approaches
Writing Support Volunteer
We’re looking for a Writing Support volunteer who is available from mid-September to mid-July 2027, to support refugee and asylum-seeking women to develop literacy and writing skills through a mixture of creative, practical and confidence-building activities.
About the role
As a Writing Support Volunteer, you will deliver engaging weekly sessions for a group of approximately 15 to 25 participants with a range of English language and literacy abilities. Sessions may include creative writing, storytelling, journal writing, letter writing, form filling and email writing.
Your role will include:
- Planning and delivering weekly writing-focused sessions, alongside the other Writing Support Volunteer
- Supporting participants to improve literacy and written communication skills
- Creating engaging activities suitable for varying abilities
- Providing encouragement and constructive feedback
- Supporting participants with practical writing tasks when needed
- Creating an inclusive and enjoyable learning environment
- Assisting with session preparation and refreshments
Time commitment
- Weekly sessions every Monday 12:30 – 14:00pm during term time, from September to December
- In-person delivery at our activities space near Old Street, London
Our will volunteer will:
- Have strong written communication skills
- Be confident leading group learning activities
- Have the ability to adapt activities to different literacy levels
- Be patient, empathetic and supportive
- Be London-based and able to attend sessions in person
You may also have:
- Teaching, literacy or creative writing experience
- Experience supporting adult learners
- Experience working with refugee communities or vulnerable groups
- Knowledge of ESOL and literacy development approaches
Pre-English Lead Facilitator Volunteer
We’re looking for a Pre-English volunteer who is available as soon as possible to mid-July 2027, to support refugee and asylum-seeking women to develop English language skills through a mixture of creative, practical and confidence-building activities.
About the role
As a Pre-Entry English Lead Facilitator Volunteer, you will plan and deliver engaging weekly ESOL sessions that support participants to develop foundational English language skills in a welcoming and encouraging environment.
Your role will include:
- Planning and leading weekly English language sessions
- Creating simple, accessible learning activities tailored to participants with little or no English
- Supporting participants to build confidence speaking and understanding English
- Adapting activities to meet different learning needs and abilities
- Working alongside volunteers and staff to ensure sessions are safe, inclusive and enjoyable
- Supporting with the preparation and clearing of refreshments and learning materials
Time commitment
- Weekly sessions every Wednesday 10:30am – 12:00pm during term time
- In-person delivery at our activities space near Old Street, London
Our will volunteer will:
- Be confident leading group learning activities
- Have strong communication and interpersonal skills
- Be patient, empathetic and supportive
- Be London-based and able to attend sessions in person
You may also have:
- An ESOL teaching qualification
- Experience supporting adult learners to learn English
- Experience working with refugee communities or vulnerable groups
Key information
- We are particularly interested to hear from people of colour and/or experience of the UK’s asylum system.
- Applications are accepted on a rolling basis.
- We ask for a minimum commitment of six months (unless otherwise specified in the role description).
- Volunteers will join our vibrant and supportive volunteering community.
- All volunteers are supported by WRW including, onboarding, quarterly feedback/supervision meetings, bi-annual socials, and ad-hoc training opportunities.
