The coronavirus pandemic is hitting the refugee women we work with particularly hard, making it even more difficult for them to find safety in the UK. Despite the resilience and strength of the women in our network, we are seeing a significant increase in the need for emergency support.

In London, we support over 300 refugee and asylum-seeking women. They have already survived so much, including rape, war and persecution. Yet many are living completely destitute in the UK, without any support from the government, and are struggling to survive during this pandemic.

We are calling each of these women regularly for a friendly chat, to update them on the latest coronavirus advice and to support them through the challenges they are facing. We have supported women who have been made homeless during the pandemic, women who do not have the money to feed their children, women who are too afraid to access the healthcare they desperately need.

We are responding by providing high-quality advice, connecting women with other forms of support, including counselling, and providing emergency hardship grants to enable women to meet their basic needs. We are also striving to keep women connected, through phone top-ups and group video sessions, to combat the intensified isolation of lockdown and enable them to rebuild their confidence.

Anything you are able to donate will help us to continue to support refugee women through this ongoing crisis and beyond. We understand that this is an insecure time for many and if you are unable to donate, please share this with your friends and family and stand in solidarity with refugee women.

Thank you.

Update: 26/05/2020

Thank you so much to everyone who has supported us so far. In just 20 days, we’ve raised £10,760 with 121 supporters! This has enabled us to immediately support vulnerable and isolated refugee women through the ongoing crisis.
We have set ourselves a new stretch target of £20,000. The extra money will allow us to continue to support over 300 asylum-seeking and refugee women each week through lockdown and beyond.

Update: 21/09/20

Thank you to everyone who has donated to this appeal to support refugee and asylum-seeking women through the ongoing pandemic. Thanks to the generosity and compassion of 387 supporters, we exceeded our stretch target of £20,000! This has enabled us to continue to support refugee women through this challenging time, responding to their most urgent needs and increasing access to mental health support and online creative and educational activities so they can continue to rebuild their lives. Thank you!

£10 can enable us to put credit on a woman’s phone.

It is vital that women can stay in touch with their loved ones, continue to access advice from their solicitor and connect with other forms of vital support.

‘Mary’ told us, Women for Refugee Women is always here for me. It means so much that you are thinking about me. Just hearing a friendly voice has brightened my day!”

£20 can provide emergency support to a woman in extreme hardship.

We provide small-scale grants to women who are struggling to survive, enabling her to meet her basic needs like food and soap.

‘G’ told us, “Your help came just in time. My cupboard was bare. I felt so panicky, what could I do to eat? With the money, my neighbour went to the shop for me and got everything I need for the week.”

Women for Refugee Women Donate £30

£70 can help a woman released from Yarl’s Wood detention centre to begin to rebuild her life in safety.

‘Ann’ told us, Yarl’s Wood turned my life upside down. Now I have been released, I am still trying to adjust. This is such a strange time. But because you are with me every step of the way I am starting to get my smile back. Thank you for making me feel that I am not alone right now.”

£100 could provide one woman with therapeutic mental health support with a qualified therapist for one month.

The Sisters Not Strangers coalition research found that 82% of 101 women said their mental health had worsened during the pandemic.

‘Reem’ told us, “Past traumas and bad experiences came flooding back for many of us.”

£300 enables us to provide high-quality immigration advice over the phone to around six women.

The lack of access to good quality advice is one of the major reasons that refugee women are made destitute through the complex asylum process. £300 enables us to provide a qualified advisor for the day who can advise women on their asylum claims, housing and other vital support.

‘Helena’ said, “I did not know what to do before I got advice, but now I know my options and have a roof over my head again.”
