Wintertime can be particularly difficult for refugee and asylum-seeking women.
The women we support have already survived so much; they have fled war, violence and other torture only to be met with racism, poverty and isolation upon arriving in the UK.
And as the days get colder and darker, the hostility and loneliness of the asylum-system is felt even more starkly.
For many of us, this time of year is one of joy, festivities and togetherness.
Yet, for many refugee women in our network, it can be a painful reminder that they are separated from their children and loved ones.
Women like Ayana who told us:
“It will be another Christmas apart from my family. I think about them every day, but especially at special times of the year like this. I don’t even know where they are, if they are safe or not, or if they are still alive. One day, I hope Christmas will be a celebration again, together with my loved ones…”
Together, we can spread some joy and love to refugee women this festive season, to let them know that they are not alone and that they are thought of.
