Kate Smurthwaite, comedienne, teaches English every Monday to members of Women Asylum Seekers Together London.

“I guess it's a total cliche to say I get more out of volunteering with WRW/WAST than I put in but it's totally true.  The teaching itself is fun and I spend a lot of the classes up at the board explaining things or giving examples with lots of pictures, mime and humour. More than that though the chance to get to know these women has been amazing in terms of my understanding of the experiences of asylum seekers in the UK – and in terms of simply making some great new friends. Why not join us? We can always use more teachers.”

Lips Choir raised funds for Women Asylum Seekers Together London at their last concert.

“As a women only choir it is really important to us to be able to support other women's community groups, and we know that the money raised will have a real impact on what WAST London is able to do. We would encourage others to do the same and support this fantastic group!”

Virago publishers sent a set of copies of Maya Angelou's I Know Why the Caged Bird Sings to the Women Asylum Seekers Together London advanced English class.

Ruthie Rogers and staff of the River Cafe in London prepared and ate a summer lunch party with Women Asylum Seekers Together London.

As Ruthie explained, "There were women from all different countries, mostly African ones, who are here with their children living in hostels. We all cooked together and it was really moving, because not many of these women had had a meal cooked for them in their lives. They had always been the providers. It was very gratifying to do that."

:

I admire the work carried out by Women for Refugee Women. By telling the true stories of women and children in the asylum process they woke a lot of people up to the scandal of child detention.

Michael Morpurgo, author of War Horse

:

I have been delighted to support Women for Refugee Women since its launch- I've been truly inspired by the great work this organisation does, enabling women who seek asylum to speak out - whether at the grassroots or to government ministers.

Oona King

:

Many refugees and asylum seekers have fled their home countries because of human rights abuses. The work of agencies like Women for Refugee Women is vital for helping people rebuild their lives and have a voice.

Trevor Phillips OBE, chair of the Equality and Human Rights Commission

:

Put the word refugee in front of woman and immediately prejudice and projection arise. Meet a refugee woman, hear her struggles – and her joys – and you encounter a person, like you and me, who has been more than unlucky....

:

....Women for Refugee Women joins the dots, restores our humanity to ourselves and enables women to fight for theirs. Please support them.
